Conversion of Abbandoned Military Areas

Abstract


The article analyses the situation of abandoned military sites, their value and significance of their conservation. It also reviews their impact on their environment and their potential in tourism, environmental, economic and social spheres. Further the positive experiences in military sites' conversion are studied. The importance of society's involvement in the conversions is discussed.
The situation of XIX-XX age's military object's, the significance of their conservation and their potential in tourism market is separately analysed.
The results of two researches are introduced, one of which inquires about the Lithuanian military objects' potential in tourism sphere, another one explores the possibilities of conversion.
